Over 10 Days More Than 120,000 Cars Drive on Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway

PHNOM PENH: Over the past 10 days of the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway’s test opening, more than 120,000 vehicles have travelled on the expressway, passing through eight different stations.

According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT), out of the more than 120,000 vehicles traveling on the expressway, 1399 drivers made calls to the expressway helpline, with a total of 378 cases needing consultation, more information or other forms of help.

The MPWT has asked citizens to understand and follow the instructions and minimum requirements for driving on the expressway, with strict adherence to traffic laws.

Before driving on the expressway, all drivers must check their vehicles, including their tires, turn signals, brake lights, headlights, engine oil and fuel, and all drivers must also strictly wear their seat belts.

While on the road, drivers must check all traffic signs and follow them diligently. Motorists must drive in the right lane of the freeway, and when overtaking another vehicle, drivers must give a left turn signal for at least five seconds before turning. Vehicles are not allowed to stop in the emergency lanes, except for firetrucks, ambulances, military and police vehicles, road maintenance vehicles, and vehicles that are damaged, have had an accident or an emergency.

Regular vehicle owners must drive at a minimum speed of 60 kilometers per hour, while drivers of semi-trailers or touring trailers must drive at a minimum speed of 80 kilometers per hour. Heavy vehicles without trailers, semi-trailers, and motorcycles with a cylinder capacity of 500CC or 27 kW or more, must driving at a speed of 100 kilometers per hour. The maximum speed limit for all forms of light vehicles is 120 kilometers per hour.
